Introduction

I am a recent graduate of the Information Technology programme at the University of Glasgow, graduating with a MSc with merit in September 2016.

This is my personal website which contains information of my software development experience and about myself. This website is hosted on a Github repository, which can be seen here.

This website is a work in progress so whilst it is a bit wordy just now I plan to make it less so in the future.

Projects

MSc Information Technology

This projects aim was to develop a program in Java which would act as a timetabling assistant for a university admin professional to help them organise the timetabling of classes for one college.
Produced as part of the MSc IT Development project, this Android application's aim was to display graphs based on data found in the Extended Penn World Tables according to user selected options. It also has the capability to save the produced graph to the device and process a new Extended Penn World Table file. The application has been uploaded to the Google Play Store and can be found here. The target group for this application are economists, economics academics and other who may require long term economic statistics.
Built using the Django framework, this was a web app designed to host Internet Readathon events and allow users of the website to log their achievements.

MA Economic and Social History & Politics

Undertaken during my undergraduate degree, the topic of Greenock - a Scottish town just outside Glasgow - from 1950-2001 focussed on the structure of employment from the heavy industries of shipbuilding, through the arrival and departure of technology companies such as IBM to the present day services-based employment. This was undertaken by myself and 3 other members of the team, of which we had to produce a 5,000 word report and a 20 minute presentation on our findings.

Skills & Experience

After deciding that I wanted to pursue my passion for software development as a long-term career, I undertook a Masters in Information Technology at the University of Glasgow, funded by the SFC. This course was wide ranging and allowed me to gain experience of many different types of technologies, particularly in Java, SQL (PostGres), Agile Methodologies and Android development.

I gained my first role as a software developer with BiP Solutions, based in Glasgow, in January 2017. BiP's products are mainly written in Java using Spring as a web framework. These connect to Oracle databases with Hibernate acting as a middle man between the database and POJOs.

In January 2018 I progressed from Graduate Developer to Junior Developer within BiP Solutions.

About Me

When I'm not at work I like to pursue various hobbies. I took up swing dancing (more specifically Lindy Hop) in 2015 and regularly attend events in Glasgow and further afield in the UK. I started volunteering with a local society - Glasgow Lindy Hoppers - in 2016. In 2017 I progressed to taking on a committee role within Glasgow Lindy Hoppers, being responsible for promotions and media for the 2017/2018 calendar year. In addition to this, I am also volunteering my own time in helping to organise the Glasgow Shag Festival in 2018 by organising hosting between visiting dancers who require somewhere to stay for the festival and matching them with local dancers who can offer a place to stay.

I also enjoy cooking and baking from scratch on a regular basis. In addition, I regularly attend technology meetups in the Glasgow area, particularly Agile Glasgow and Ladies of Code to further enhance my knowledge.

Apologies for the state of the badge, the blame can solely be blamed on LinkedIn itself for not updating their LinkedIn badge styling. My next project for this page will be to make my own.
